Statement of intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? My fictional band is called “Cobalt Flats” and are a small group who release upbeat, instrumental, 70’s funk style music. The song I am using for my music video is “Lonely Town” by “Vulfpeck”. The lyrics of this song are raising mental health issues and have links to depression in particular. This song will be released as a single by the group who are showing concern to the problem of mental health and depression. The music video I will create will be a narrative / performance mixture. The performance side of the video will simply be shots of the musicians in a home studio recording the song. The aesthetic I am going for can be described as saturated and lo-fi. The studio footage will be simple camera shots with some visual effects over the top. The narrative will be about “the mayor of lonely town”, which is a line from the lyrics, and it

Unfinished sympathy music video textual analysis

Massive Attack are a hip hop/electronic group from Bristol, England which emerged from the unique music and graffiti scene in the late 80's/ early 90's. "Unfinished sympathy" was their first ever single on a major record label. Founding members: Robert "3D" Del Naja Grant "Daddy G" Marshall Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles Graffiti artist Banksy, whose identity is unknown, has been theorised to be a part of massive attack as a blogger had mapped appearances of Banksy's artwork around the world and noticed a link with Massive Attack's tour dates. 3D denied all the claims and said it was just a coincidence but they were good friends. Trip Hop and its significance: Originating in the 1970's, Bristol became a hotbed for English pop culture. Rock, Reggae and Punk were the dominant sounds, and the city had a huge skateboarding and graffiti subculture which carry's on today. This is all surrounded by Bristol's economic and racial hi

Vulfpeck - Textual analysis - Aesthetics

Image
Vulfpeck are an American funk grouped formed in 2011 by Jack Stratton, Joe Dart, Theo Katzman and Woody Goss. The 4 band members attended the University of Michigan music school. They often feature live and in studio with partners such as Antwaun Stanley, Joey Dosik, and Cory Wong. All of which are essentially part of the band but not officially. I think their aesthetics suit them as a funk band as the genre is typically over compressed and low fidelity, which is the effect they were going for in their music videos, which are generally performance based, with footage straight from the studio when they recorded the song. I particularly like the aesthetic of the song named "Cory Wong", written by the band during a jam session in 2013.  The music video for "Cory Wong" is interesting as it is a video of the studio performance (which is just a living room) with a screenplay over the top of it, scrolling and keeping up with the video.  I like this style as it is delibera

Applying theorists to LFTV drama

Theories of representation - Hall Can be applied to any media product, including LFTV drama Draws attention to the role of power in representations - both the general distribution of power in society and the power of the television industry- but the power of the audience to decode representations in different ways. Tends not to explain LFTV dramas as a whole but can apply to specific parts.
