Vulfpeck - Textual analysis - Aesthetics

Vulfpeck are an American funk grouped formed in 2011 by Jack Stratton, Joe Dart, Theo Katzman and Woody Goss. The 4 band members attended the University of Michigan music school.

They often feature live and in studio with partners such as Antwaun Stanley, Joey Dosik, and Cory Wong. All of which are essentially part of the band but not officially.

I think their aesthetics suit them as a funk band as the genre is typically over compressed and low fidelity, which is the effect they were going for in their music videos, which are generally performance based, with footage straight from the studio when they recorded the song.

I particularly like the aesthetic of the song named "Cory Wong", written by the band during a jam session in 2013.

The music video for "Cory Wong" is interesting as it is a video of the studio performance (which is just a living room) with a screenplay over the top of it, scrolling and keeping up with the video.

I like this style as it is deliberately lo-fi, the recording is all one take, the music is over compressed(which is vulfpecks style), and the video has colour grading and effects to make it look and feel older, for example a tape machine effect.

The screenplay includes the camera actions, as the studio performance is all one take.

It also includes actions of the band members, obviously written after the video was recorded, with the intention of looking like a screenplay.

Here, the video cuts to a live performance of the band as the song changes into its next section. it labels this part of the video the breakdown in the screenplay. The video keeps its overly compressed and low quality style, despite being a live performance video
