Statement of intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?

My fictional band is called “Cobalt Flats” and are a small group who release upbeat, instrumental, 70’s funk style music. The song I am using for my music video is “Lonely Town” by “Vulfpeck”. The lyrics of this song are raising mental health issues and have links to depression in particular. This song will be released as a single by the group who are showing concern to the problem of mental health and depression.

The music video I will create will be a narrative / performance mixture. The performance side of the video will simply be shots of the musicians in a home studio recording the song. The aesthetic I am going for can be described as saturated and lo-fi. The studio footage will be simple camera shots with some visual effects over the top. The narrative will be about “the mayor of lonely town”, which is a line from the lyrics, and it will be portraying this man’s thoughts and loneliness. More lyrics such as “what’s inside his head” and “shouting his message out but there’s no one there” will help to achieve this.

I will use more than one social group by having one person with mental health issues, specifically depression, and one person without, who doesn’t quite understand the issues. I will use mise en scene elements such as close ups and some sound elements from the song to clearly show this to the audience.

Overall I feel my music video meets the brief as it protests / raises the issue of mental health and depression, which in this day and age is an issue which is more prominent than ever and has more social media attention than ever before. More than one social group will be used, with one person without.

For my website I intend to make it more positive and show the group in a more light-hearted way than the song “lonely town”. However, I don’t want it to seem like the group doesn’t care about mental health and depression from their website, the video is simply a one off expressing their concerns to the issue.

I will use wix.com to create a website expressing the groups playful style of music and I will take inspiration from various existing band websites and social media pages to help me in designing a modern but vintage looking site. Inspiration I plan on using is the musician Cory Wong, who is a member of Vulfpeck and also does solo work.

Through wix.com, there are several features I can add to my website, such as a song player, which I will use to upload “Lonely Town” as a single release, with an orignal image album cover that goes along with the colour scheme of orange and light blue. I plan to use social media links and pages to create a cross media platform with the same design choices and colours.

I intend to create an album cover for the single release with the same orange and light blue design, it will link to the name “Cobalt Flats” as the name is a type of Bass guitar string and the album cover will be a top down view of a precision jazz bass, used by the bassist of the group.

I will add a tour dates page but instead of real life tour dates there will be links to live shows streamed on YouTube, in a similar fashion to Rhett Shull’s band Deacon Knight, who have thrived through coronavirus lockdowns by performing music live on YouTube.

For my additional content I will make a promotional teaser video for a new song the group will release, the music used will be original and written by me,  I plan to post this video on the groups social media pages as well as a front and centre spot on the website.
